BNPB: 5 Districts Of Palangka Raya City Have High Disaster Potential

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that five sub-districts in Palangka Raya City, Central Kalimantan have moderate to high disaster potential.

BNPB Acting Head of Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said the results came from BNPB's InaRisk study.

"The five sub-districts identified are in the Pahandut, Sabangau, Jekan Raya, Bukit Batu, and Rakumpit areas," Abdul said as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, April 5.

Abdul said that throughout 2022, BNPB recorded four floods that hit the City of Palangka Raya, including in Pahandut and Jekan Raya, with 2 fatalities.

Responding to these conditions, BNPB appealed to BPBD and residents to remain vigilant and alert to the potential for rising water levels in affected areas.

"Get in the habit of looking at weather forecasts and following developments on the potential for rain so that potential flooding can be predicted. Residents can take preparedness measures, for example ensuring the availability of food and medicine logistics, if needed at any time in an emergency," said Abdul.

In addition, if a family member needs evacuation, ensure that this step is carried out safely or contact the local BPBD.

The two-day weather forecast for Palangka Raya City still has a chance of light-intensity rain. Meanwhile, on the day after tomorrow (7/4), the weather has a chance of light to moderate rain.

Previously, three sub-districts in Palangka Raya City were flooded until Tuesday evening (4/4). Developments until yesterday afternoon, at 16.16 WIB, the water level has increased.

BPBD Palangka Raya City reported an increase in water discharge in the affected areas of around 5 to 60 cm. His party monitored that some residents chose to stay in their homes due to the flood. As for the weather conditions, some areas were observed to be raining with light to moderate intensity.

A number of affected villages are in Jekan Raya, Pahandut, and Sebangau Districts. While the total number of sub-districts submerged in floods in the three sub-districts was 5 sub-districts, namely Katimpun, Bukit Tunggal, and Palangka Sub-Districts in Jekan Raya District, Tanjung Pinang Sub-District in Pahandut and Bereng Bengkel in Sebangau.

The local BPBD noted that 522 of its residents (145 families) were affected by the incident which occurred last Monday (3/4), at 15.30 WIB. There are no reports of residents fleeing or casualties due to the floods that are still inundating the area.

The flood submerged residents' houses, schools, and roads. A total of 138 residents' houses were affected by the floods which occurred after moderate to heavy-intensity rains in the area.
