In Addition To Custody, Moral Education Can Also Prevent The Nature Of Violence In Children

JAKARTA - Child psychologist from the University of Indonesia Dr. Rose Mini Agoes Salim, M.Psi underlined the importance of moral education, in addition to parenting, to prevent children from growing up with violent traits in adults.

"If we look at children who like to commit violence, it may also have an influence on their parenting, but sometimes parents do not teach what is moral," said the psychologist who is familiarly called Romi as quoted by ANTARA.

"Morality is a person's ability to find out or sort out which one is good and which one is bad," he added.

Moral education, according to Romi, can start from teaching children how to empathize. With empathy, children also understand that hitting, one example, is bad behavior.

According to Romi, empathy is also a person's ability to understand the feelings, thoughts, and desires of others he talks to. If you are able to empathize with other people, your child will be better able to understand the condition of others and tend to be tolerant.

"In addition to empathy, there are many things related to moral education that can be taught to children such as fairness or a sense of justice, self-control or self-control, to goodness or kindness or to do good to others," Romi said.

If these things are taught to children, then children will naturally be able to sort out which behavior is good and bad, including knowing which behaviors do not hurt others. On the other hand, if it has never been taught, it will have an impact on the lack of understanding experienced by children. Romi views morals as something that seems to be given from God.

However, if it is not stimulated and not honed, it will be difficult for a person to understand and sort out which are good and bad. Despite moral education, parenting is also another important thing that parents must understand in order to prevent the emergence of violence in children in the future.

There are four types of parenting, including authoritarian, permissive, negatived or neglected, and democratic. According to Romi, each of these parenting styles has advantages and disadvantages. However, he added, parents can actually choose to apply which parenting style.

"Surprisingly parents sometimes don't do that. If they have used a parenting style, that is what is continuously used. So the dominant is in one parenting style," said Romi.

"Actually, the parenting style must be adjusted to the situation and conditions of the current situation," Romi concluded.
