Environmentally Friendly Vehicle Segment Still Dominated By Hybrids In Indonesia, TAM: Situations Can Change
JAKARTA - The growth of environmentally friendly vehicles in Indonesia experienced a fairly rapid increase this year. This is evidenced from data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) which stated that the segment rose 322 percent from the previous year.
In the first ten months of 2023, sales of environmentally friendly cars consisting of hybrid and EVs reached 51,831 units as a whole or jumped 322 percent year-on-year which previously only won 12,281 units.
This segment is dominated by hybrid type vehicles that reach 39,911 units or contribute 77 percent of the total environmentally friendly vehicles. Then, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars only contributed 0.18 percent. Then, electric vehicles (EVs) were 11,910 or around 22.97 percent.
In this segment, Toyota leads with a total of 28,575 units consisting of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), PHEV, and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). The manufacturer has sold 482 units of BEV and HEV cars totaling 28,093 units. This further strengthens the position of the manufacturer as a pioneer in hybrid technology.
In response to this, Anton Jimmi Suwandi, as Marketing Director of PT Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM), admitted that the current hybrid sales are indeed very large, but he cannot deny that EVs can approach sales one day.

The model sold by Toyota for the BEV segment is bZ4X in Indonesia. Then, as well as the PHEV market represented by RAV4 GR Sport and the HEV model consisting of Corolla, Camry, Kijang Innova Zenix, Yaris Cross, Alphard, Vellfire, and C-HR.
Surprisingly, the second position for manufacturers with environmentally friendly vehicle sales fell to Suzuki, which acquired 10,060 units. Currently, the manufacturer is only selling a hybrid model consisting of Ertiga GX Hybrid, Ertiga SS Hybrid, XL7 Beta Hybrid, XL7 Alpha Hybrid, and All-New Grand Vitara.
Hyundai, a manufacturer from South Korea, occupies the third position in the sale of environmentally friendly cars by reaching 6,084 units. In this segment, Hyundai only sells EVs consisting of Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona Electric, and Ioniq EV.
