GIS And East Java Provincial Government Collaborate In Control Of Pollution And Environmental Damage In East Java
JAKARTA - Considered to have competence in the environmental sector, the Provincial Government (Pemprov) of East Java cooperates with PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) in cooperation in Control of Pollution and Environmental Damage in the East Java Region.
Collaboration in the scope of efforts to control wastewater pollution, control domestic waste pollution, improve areas in the river border, provide supporting facilities and infrastructure, educate the public about the environment, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by the Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa and President Director of SIG, Donny Arsal at the peak event of commemoration of World Environment Day at the 2023 East Java Province at Battalion ARMED 1/Rook Singosari, Malang, on Monday 4 September.
The Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, said that the world is currently facing a potential energy crisis. This condition makes the use of waste as a source of renewable energy (waste-to-energy) even more urgent. Through this initiative, the use of fossils to become an energy source is expected to be reduced.
The world is highlighting how we can do 3R (recycle, reduce, reuse) from plastic waste to energy or become something productive. Therefore, I thank various parties who have made a maximum contribution to protecting nature and provide good environmental support. Never stop to protect nature. Protect our nature and protect our forests," said Khofifah Indar Parawansa.
GIS President Director, Donny Arsal said, preserving the environment is the obligation of all components of the nation. As a company operating in the East Java region, GIS supports the efforts of the East Java Provincial Government in maintaining the environment so that it remains sustainable so that it becomes a safe and comfortable place to live even for future generations. This initiative is in line with the pillar of GIS sustainability, namely Environmental Protection.
"As a sustainability-oriented company, one of our efforts to realize our commitment to environmental management is through the implementation of circular economic principles that focus on managing raw materials, energy, emissions, wastewater, and efficiency in the use of clean water," said Donny Arsal.

In particular, Donny Arsal explained, GIS also participates in overcoming city waste problems with refuse-derived fuel (RDF) technology which converts waste into a renewable energy source for coal substitution. In addition to helping the government in overcoming waste problems, innovation in waste management also helps companies get alternative energy sources that are environmentally friendly.
In addition to RDF, GIS also utilizes biomass originating from rice husks, corncobs, mete shells, and palm shells, as alternative fuels for the cement-making process.
"SIG is committed to implementing sustainability principles throughout the company's business and operational processes, starting from the planning, production, waste management, to distribution stages. For this commitment, GIS products have been recognized as environmentally friendly products with the achievement of Green Label Certification from the Green Product Council Indonesia (GPCI), the Ekolabel Swadekad certificate from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, as well as the Green Industry award from the Ministry of Industry. In addition, in 2022 one GIS factory won the Proper Gold awarder while seven other factories received a Green Proper awarder from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), "said Donny Arsal.
