Profile Of Anwar Iskandar, NU Senior Kiai Who Becomes The General Chair Of The New MUI

YOGYAKARTA Profile Anwar Iskandar received the spotlight after he was appointed as the new chairman (ketum) of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). Anwar Iskandar replaces the previous MUI chairman, KH. Miftachul Akhyar who has resigned.

Quoted from the NU Online website and from several sources, KH. Anwar Iskandar is one of the Nahdlatur Ulama (NU) scholars from Banyuwangi, East Java. He is a senior NU kiai figure who has qualified capacity in the field of congregation and society.

The charismatic cleric was born on April 24, 1950 in Berasan Village, Muncar District, Banyuwangi. He is a descendant of KH. Iskandar (Askandar), the cleric and founder and caretaker of the Mambaul Ulum Islamic boarding school, Muncar, Banyuwangi.

As the son of the kiai, KH Anwar Iskandar had studied and recited at the boarding school which was cared for by his own father. In addition, he also had time to attend religious education at the Lirboyo Kediri Islamic Boarding School in 1967. After 3 years, KH Anwar Iskandar then left for Jakarta to continue his bachelor's degree education at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta to take concentration of Arabic Literature.

In the NU environment, KH Anwar Iskandar had led one of the youth organizations, namely the Ansor Youth Movement (ketua GP Ansor) of the Kediri municipality branch. His leadership began in 1975 and lasted for 8 years.

In addition, KH Anwar Iskandar also served as chairman of the East Java Syuro Council (PKB). He also served as a member of the MPR from East Java. Finally, KH Anwar Iskandar was the Deputy Rais Aam PBNU for the period 2021-2026.

The determination of KH Anwar Iskandar was determined as the Head of MUI through a plenary meeting held by MUI at the Bidakara Hotel Jakarta on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. The MUI Leadership Council, chairman and secretary of commissions, agencies, and MUI institutions were also present at the meeting.

In this decree, KH Anwar Iskandar was ratified as Chairman of the MUI through a plenary meeting chaired by KH Ma'ruf Amin as Chairman of the MUI Advisory Council. In the future, KH Anwar Iskandar will continue the leadership of KH Miftachul Akhyar until 2025.
