104 Thousand Hectares Of Forest In Indonesia Gundul Due To Deforestation Throughout 2021-2022
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) noted a decline in deforestation due to deforestation in Indonesia from 2021 to 2022.
Acting Director General of Forestry and Environmental Planning of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Rudha A. Sugardiman, said that throughout 2021-2022 deforestation covers an area of 104 thousand hectares.
In a media briefing that took place in Jakarta, Monday, he said that the figure came from the gross deforestation rate of 119.4 thousand hectares minus the reforest rate of 15.4 thousand hectares.
According to him, the deforestation rate for the 2021-2022 period is around 8.4 percent lower than the deforestation rate for 2020-2021.
Ruandha said, during 2020-2021 deforestation covers an area of 113.5 thousand hectares. This figure comes from the gross deforestation rate of 139.1 thousand hectares minus a reforestation of 25.6 thousand hectares.
"Indonesia's forest decline is relatively low and tends to be stable," said Ruandha, quoted by ANTARA, Monday, June 26.
Based on data from gross deforestation in 2021-2022, deforestation mostly occurs in secondary forests, where deforestation covers an area of 106.4 thousand hectares or 89.1 percent of the secondary forest area and 70.9 percent or 75.4 thousand hectares of which are in forest areas.
Regarding the condition of Indonesia's land and forest cover, Ruandha said that changes in forest cover occurred from time to time.
According to him, changes in land and forest cover include conversion of forests for the development of non-foremal sectors, additions, and forest fires, as well as forest rehabilitation activities.
"To find out the existence and area of land cover, both forested and unforested, we carry out forest monitoring and deforestation every year," he said.
Forest monitoring and deforestation are carried out throughout mainland Indonesia, which covers 187 million hectares, both in forest areas and outside forest areas.
The results of Indonesian forest monitoring in 2022 show that the forest area is 96 million hectares or 51.2 percent of the total land area of Indonesia.
