Already Met, Teten Admits Instagram Refuses To Take Down Accounts For Illegal Used Clothing Sellers

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs (Kemenkop UKM) has met with Instagram regarding the discovery of user accounts promoting and selling illegal used clothes on social media Instagram.

The promotion and sale of illegal used clothing are still being carried out by Instagram user accounts in the Bandung area, West Java.

Related to this, the Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs (Menkop UKM) Teten Masduki assessed that Instagram still has not followed the request from the Kemenkop UKM to reduce (take down) accounts that promote these illegal goods.

Because, in a meeting with the Kemenkop UKM team, Instagram claimed to be just a platform and had no part in doing what the Indonesian government wanted.

"They (the Instagram party) said it was only a platform. Well, in my opinion, this can no longer be like that," said Minister Teten at the Kemenkop UKM Office, Jakarta, Wednesday, October 25.

In fact, said Teten, Indonesia itself has banned the sale or promotion of illegal goods, either on e-commerce platforms or social media, as well as Instagram.

"We ask Instagram (IG) to lower the (take down) account because, right, selling illegal goods, that's not allowed, but IG feels they don't have to be responsible for it," he said.

Therefore, he continued, his party will still wait for a commitment from Instagram regarding the problem.

"Sales of smuggled goods have a crime, so we want them to have that commitment and the development of platform arrangements in the world is like that, the platform must be responsible for the content on the platform," he concluded.
