JAKARTA - PT Persero Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk (BRI) reminded customers not to just install applications to avoid losing their balances in savings accounts.
The warning follows the case of BRI savings customers in Malang City, East Java, who lost account balances of up to Rp1.4 billion, after opening an application-formed marriage invitation (APK) on WhatsApp.
"Data or information can be stolen by fraudsters if the public installs applications with unofficial sources sent by irresponsible parties," said BRI Malang Branch Office Head Sutoyo Akhmad Fajar in an official statement in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Friday, July 7.
For the incident that happened to one of its customers in Malang, he revealed that his party had investigated the victim's complaint, where he was a victim of an online fraud or social engineering.
The incident occurred because the victim had leaked personal and secret banking transaction data (OTP code) to irresponsible parties so that transactions could run successfully.
Akhmad deeply regretted the incident and empathized with the person concerned. However, the bank will only compensate customers if negligence is caused by the banking system.
Meanwhile, BRI also appealed that customers receive notifications via short messages or electronic mail for transactions that are not carried out, so that they can immediately contact the official BRI contacts at 14017/1500017. Customers are also advised not to easily believe in unofficial social media accounts on behalf of BRI.
BRI's official communication channel (blue tick/verified) can only be accessed by customers through www.bri.co.id, Instagram: @bankbri_id, Twitter: bankbri_id, bri contact, promo_bri, Facebook: Bank BRI, YouTube: Bank BRI, TikTok: Bank BRI, and contact BRI 14017/1500017.
