JAKARTA - China has released its first homemade desktop open-source operating system, named OpenKylin. This was reported by state media, as part of the country's efforts to reduce its dependence on US technology.
Launched on Wednesday, July 5, and based on the existing open-source Linux operating system, the Chinese version was built by a community of about 4,000 developers, and is used in space programs as well as industries such as finance and energy.
According to state media reports, a huge market for operating systems in China was worth 15.5 billion yuan (IDR 31.6 trillion) last year.
Developing an operating system independent of US technology has become an important goal for China's technology industry in recent years, with many companies and organizations contributing to the development of the OpenKylin system.
