JAKARTA - Organizers announced that world number two Novak Djokovic withdrew from the ATP Masters Toronto tournament due to exhaustion.
The announcement came a week after the 23-time Serbian Grand Slam champion lost to Spanish Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.
Djokovic's withdrawal into the US Open warm-up tournament which will start on August 7 lost the four-time champion of the event.
"I've always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after talking to my team, we believe it's the right decision to be taken," Djokovic said in a statement released by Tennis Canada, as broadcast by AFP on Monday.
"I want to thank Karl Hale, Tournament Director, for understanding this decision. I really hope to return to Canada and Toronto in the years to play in front of the amazing fans there."
Alcaraz thwarted Djokovic from winning his eighth Wimbledon title matching Roger Federer's record last week, as well as giving his first defeat at the Center Court All England Club in 10 years.
The Spanish tennis player's victory also ended Djokovic's 36-year-old chances of sweeping the Grand Slam calendar this year after his Australian and French Open victories made his tally of major titles a record 23 titles.
