JAKARTA - A shattered guitar once played by Kurt Cobain sold for around 600,000 US dollars (equivalent to Rp8.92 billion) at auction.
The instrument in question is a black Fender Stratocaster, which was reportedly broken by vocalist around the same time Nirvana released their second album which is now an icon, Nevermind.
hosted by Julien's Auctions, the guitar sold on May 20 at Hard Rock Cafe in New York City, and surpassed all expectations by hitting 10 times the expected value.
Initially, the guitar was estimated to produce between 60 thousand and 80 thousand at the event, because of the period used by the musician and the details included in the body.
The Stratocaster was not only reportedly used by Cobain around 1991, but also featured signatures from the three members of Nirvana - Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.
Accompanimenting the guitar is a short note from Cobain, written for his friend and music collaborator Mark Lanegan, who died in February last year.
On the inscription at the bottom of the guitar body, the frontman also misspelled his own name. Hell-o Mark. Love, your pal Kurdt Kobain. Washed up Rock Star," he said.
According to the auction house, the instrument was given to Lanegan by the late singer Smells Like Teen Spirit during the Nevermind Nirvana tour in North America in 1992.
