Beat Hawaii, Florida Beach Is The Best In The United States In 2023
JAKARTA - St. State Park. George Island in Florida gets the top spot on the best coast in the United States for 2023.
That's based on the list of the best beaches in Uncle Sam's country this year released last May by 'Dr. Beach', aka coastal scientist Stephen Leatherman.
This year, half of the 10 best beaches in the United States are in Florida and Hawaii. This barrier island park offers nine miles of native beaches along Gulf Coast. With natural routes for cycling and hiking, plus bird-watching, fishing, boating, and camping activities, St George offers more than just swimming and sunbathing.
This place is also the best place to observe stars with limited light pollution, as well as an observation platform for night sky exploration.
The beach has "some of the whitest and best sand in the world," said Leotherman, who is a professor at the Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International University, reported by CNN July 25.
"The water is clear and clean, far from the source of pollution on this offshore barrier island," he continued.
Professor Leotherman himself has ranked the best beaches in America since 1991.
He used 50 criteria to evaluate hundreds of public beaches in the United States. These criteria include the width of the coast, softness of sand, temperature and color of water, wildlife and more.
For the second best position of the year, Duke Kahanamoku Beach on Oahu Island, Hawaii, is at the western tip of Waikiki Beach, which is known for its fewer visitors than the busier beaches.
The Diamond Head volcano is towering in the distance, making it a very amazing place. The beach is suitable for families with children, thanks to offshore coral reefs that protect it.
Wailea Beach in Maui and Poipu Beach in Kauai are the other Hawaiian beaches that are included in this year's top 10 list.

Florida's Caladesi Island State Park in Dunedin/Clearwater is also in the top 10. However, none of Florida's Atlantic beaches have made the top 10 of this year.
Professor Leotherman pointed out that this year's Atlantic coastline was influenced by sargassum seaweed.
While the other five beaches are in New York, North Carolina, California, South Carolina, and Massachusetts.
