BMKG Warns Early Forest And Landa Parts Of NTT

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has given an early warning of the potential for forest and land fires (karhutla) that have the opportunity to hit parts of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"Some areas of NTT are currently in a very high level of flammable at the top of the ground surface," said Head of the El Tari Kupang BMKG Meteorological Station Agung Sudiono Abadi as reported by ANTARA, Friday, May 5.

He mentioned that some areas of NTT were in very high fire facilities, namely Sabu Raijua Regency, Rote Ndao, Kupang City, as Kupang Regency, South Central Timor, North Central Timor, Belu, Malacca.

In addition, Lembata districts, parts of Alor, East Flores, East Sumba, and Central Sumba.

Agung explained, in these areas, the condition of the logs and leaves that usually cover the forest floor is very dry and very flammable.

Therefore, he said, it is very prone to causing forest and land fires when hotspots appear.

BMKG urges residents to avoid activities that can trigger hotspots such as clearing or clearing land by burning grass.

Residents also need to avoid the act of throwing cigarette butts in an open area where there are piles of garbage or dry leaves that are easily struck by fire.

The emergence of hotspots, said Agung, will grab quickly when supported by strong winds that make extinguishing efforts more difficult.

"Carhutla events generally occur due to human actions so that actions that trigger hotspots need to be avoided," said Agung.
