JAKARTA Council and EU Parliament (EU) reached a temporary agreement in making certification frameworks for carbon removal, carbon farming, and carbon storage technologies.

This certification was created to facilitate and accelerate carbon removal activity as well as reduce soil emissions in the EU. In addition, this carbon removal certification will support climate neutrality or net zero emissions by 2050.

After the carbon dioxide removal technology certification is passed, companies adopting a zero carbon emissions strategy must follow the certification process. The government will screen out projects that promise emission reduction, but not implemented properly.

This certification will include four types of emission reduction, namely permanent carbon removal, temporary carbon storage in durable products, temporary carbon storage from carbon farming, and reducing soil emissions.

Temporary carbon storage from carbon farming and land emission reduction activities must last at least five years to obtain certification and should not lead to land acquisition for speculative purposes that have a negative impact on rural communities, the EU Council said in an official statement.

Meanwhile, the carbon removal certification process must go through four general criteria. The criteria proposed by the Commission are quantity, addition, long-term storage, and sustainability.

These four criteria will be developed into a certification methodology adapted to the type and purpose of carbon removal. The development of this certification methodology will be worked out by the European Commission with a group of experts.

The Commission, assisted by a group of experts, will develop an adapted certification methodology for different types of carbon removal activities with the aim of ensuring the application of correct, aligned, and cost-effective carbon removal criteria, the EU Council said.
