JAKARTA - The Seoul government, the South Korean metropolitan city, plans to use drones to solve the congestion problem. The plan, this drone will start operating next year.

According to the Korea Herald report, the government will use Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based drones to monitor traffic in real-time. Later, the AI in unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) will analyze traffic patterns.

In addition, drones deployed from a height of 200 meters above the ground will predict future traffic conditions. This capability could help the government deal with too heavy traffic flow.

This AI-based drone has been tested twice by the Seoul government. The test of this traffic management system with drones was carried out in September and last October in areas that were holding major events.

The government's target at that time was Seoul's International Fireworks Festival at Yeouido and the Haloween event at Seongsu-dong. The drone was flown to monitor crowds, mass density, traffic flow, to road conditions that surveillance cameras could not monitor.

For now, data taken by drones are only collected and submitted to city government traffic management centers as well as Seoul Transportation Operations and Information Services.

Next year, data in the form of these recordings will begin to be shared with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the Seoul Facilities Company so that the management and response of drone traffic management can work optimally.
