JAKARTA - A recent study revealed that online games are quite popular in Southeast Asia. It is proven that most online consumers in the region are gamers.

Samsung Electronics Co revealed that based on research by Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) Gaming Insight Study, 7 of the 10 online consumers in the region are gamers.

"Currently playing games is more than just a hobby. This is a free time filler that brings people together. The Southeast Asia and Oceania regions have a very large gaming community, and this research highlights the unique needs and habits of playing their games, both as players and as fans of e-sports," said Regional Head of Mobile Experience Business, Samsung Electronics Southeast Asia and Oceania, Carl Nordenberg in a statement received on Thursday, March 2.

Research in collaboration with ONE Esports revealed that more than 6,800 consumers aged 18 to 49 years in seven markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam surveyed in the last quarter of 2022, showed a high love for gaming either at home or when they were mobile.

Across the region, playing to relieve stress and relaxing is said to be the main reason for playing games (74 percent), with an average of 7 hours a week spent playing games.

Most gamers (92 percent) prefer to play games comfortably at home, and more than half of gamers (58 percent) spend an average USD 30 US dollars equivalent to IDR 458 thousand per month on game-related purchases such as exclusive online content, esports tournament tickets, streamer subscriptions, skins, and merchandise collections.

The study also identified four different gamer personalities among game fans in the region, such as Hardcore Gamer, Gaming Enthusiast, Casal Gamer & Spectator, and Casal Gamer, based on the total time they spend playing games and watching game content or esports.

It was found that more than half of Indonesian gamers surveyed (54 percent) do this hobby at least several times a week, consisting of Hardcore Gamers and Gaming Enthusiast.

"With this understanding, we can continue to empower Samsung users to fully enjoy their passion. Either on Galaxy devices, QLED TV or our gaming monitor," said Nordenberg.

Gaming Enthusiast and Hardcore Gamers are very pursuing their hobbies, where their most frequent gaming activities include watching videos around gaming, discussing games with other people, reading updates and news about games, spending money on game-related objects, and finally, following gaming on social media.
