JAKARTA - The United States military and allied forces destroyed unmanned aircraft (UAVs) and unmanned surface ships launched by Yemen's Houthis in the Red Sea, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

"On March 20, coalition aircraft successfully attacked and destroyed one unmanned aerial vehicle and CENTCOM successfully attacked and destroyed one unmanned surface ship, both launched by Iran-backed Houthi terrorists from the Houthi-controlled Yemeni region," the US Central Command wrote on social media. X reported by ANTARA, Thursday, March 21.

There were no injuries or fatalities from the US side or coalition ships, according to the command statement.

CENTCOM also said it believed the weapon was a "real threat" to US Navy ships and merchant ships in the region.

"These actions are carried out to protect freedom of sailing and make international waters safer and more secure for the US Navy and merchant ships," CENTCOM continued.

Yemen's Houthi group has targeted cargo ships in the Red Sea owned or operated by Israeli companies or delivered goods to and from Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli attacks since October 7.

The Red Sea is one of the most frequently used sea routes in the world for oil and fuel shipments.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin recently announced the formation of a multinational mission, the Operation of the Prosperity Guardian, to counter the Houthi attack.
