Metro Police Chief: There Is No Right Formula To Overcome Jakarta Traffic Jams

JAKARTA - Metro Jaya Police Chief Inspector General Karyoto admitted that until now there has been no right formula to overcome the problem of traffic congestion in Jakarta.

"Indeed, on a daily basis we have not been able to suppress this congestion. Various discussions between us and the local government have not found the right formula for dealing with congestion," he said at the end of the 2023 Polda Metro Jaya year at the Polda Metro Jaya Hall, Thursday, December 28.

Karyoto explained that odd-even regulations are considered to be able to cut congestion, but this cannot be applied to all types of vehicles and is also applied at any time.

"If even and odd are applied to all types of vehicles, people will definitely protest, especially at all hours of time, later people will ask for half tax. Because if I have an even car, I will definitely go out only in even. This means that I pay even and odd taxes," he said.

However, his party and related stakeholders continue to seek the best formulation to reduce congestion.

"But what is clear is that our efforts to deploy members in vulnerable hours (macet) are trying to make things a bit easier," he said, quoted by Antara.

Meanwhile, according to data released, the number of traffic accidents throughout 2023 has increased from 2022. There were 11,629 traffic accidents that occurred in 2023, while in 2022 there were 10,494 cases.

"For victims who died in 2023, it decreased by 11% by 79 people compared to 2022. The number of seriously injured victims in 2023 increased by 36% by 608 people compared to 2022. The number of lightly injured victims in 2023 increased by 11% by 1,149 people compared to 2022," said Karyoto.
