MEDAN - Medan City Transportation Service, North Sumatra, said the electric bus for the Medan-Binjai-Deli Serdang (Medan field) Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service was operated in early 2024.

"God willing, starting next year on January 4, 2024, we will operate one corridor for mass transportation using electric buses," said Head of the Medan City Transportation Service, Iswar Lubis, as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, December 27.

The use of this Medan City BRT electric bus operates for free for Medan City residents by developing a modern mass transportation system.

This electric bus operation is the first time in the capital city of North Sumatra Province as one of the stages to realize road-based mass transportation.

For the starting point, the departure of the BRT Medan service electric bus corridor is one of the housing complexes in the Jalan Karya Wisata area, Medan Johor District.

"From J-City to Jalan Karya Wisata, enter Jalan AH Nasution, then turn to Jalan Jamin Ginting to accommodate residents studying at USU (North Sumatra University)," he explained.

From Jalan Jamin Ginting entered Jalan Pattimura, Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Pengadilan, and Jalan Captain Maulana Lubis.

Then to Jalan Balai Kota, Jalan Putri Hijau, Jalan Guru Patimpus, Jalan Gatot Subroto, Jalan Iskandar Muda, Jamin Ginting, Jalan AH Nasution and back to Jalan Karya Wisata.

"The neighborhood of Diponegoro Street accommodates residents around the North Sumatra governor's office, then turns to Maulana Lubis Street to accommodate residents in offices around the Medan Mayor's office," he said.

Iswar also revealed that along this route, 46 bus stops will be built with a timely service concept with a stop time of 15 seconds to open the bus door, go up and down, and leave.

The Ministry of Transportation said that the construction of the BRT Medangan service infrastructure was financed by development partners, namely the French World Bank and AFD at a cost of IDR 1.9 trillion.

The Medangan BRT has a 21-kilometer track, connected to 31 bus stops with 17 routes reaching Medan, Binjai and Deli Serdang using a fleet of 515 buses supported by depots, bus stops and special lanes.

The Medan City Transportation Agency said the details of the engineering design (DED) for the Medan City BRT service are targeted for completion at the end of November 2023, the BRT Medan field route in January 2024, and the laying of the first stone in February 2024.

"There are five to six electric buses that we can set the time schedule" in peak hours every fifteen minutes and outside of peak hours or quiet per half hour," said Iswar.
