Grok 3, Elon Musk's Strongest AI, Begins To Launch
JAKARTA - Elon Musk has again rocked the artificial intelligence industry with a major announcement regarding superior products from xAI, Grok. After promising releases in a few weeks, Musk's AI company finally started launching Grok 3, on February 19.
Grok 3 took a similar approach with Gemini or ChatGPT by presenting a series of models designed for various purposes. This latest version aims to compete directly with top AI models such as OpenAI's GPT-4, Gemini from Google, and DeepSek newcomers.

xAI claims that Grok 3 is capable of outperforming GPT-4o in benchmarks such as AIME (focus on mathematics) and GPQA (focus on Ph.D. physics, biology, and chemical applications). However, xAI also features a 3 mini Grok, a model that prioritizes speed despite slightly sacrificed accuracy. The model is similar to Gemini Flash of Google, which is designed for daily needs.
In addition, xAI introduced the Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning, which appears to be a direct answer to the o3-mini and o3-mini-high GPT models. The company claims that their AI models excel in various benchmarks, including AIME 2025, the latest version of the AI math benchmark.
The Grok 3 Reasoning model is designed to process the problem more deeply, resulting in longer but producing a more accurate response in dealing with complex demand. Users can also enable "Big Brain Mode" to improve AI reasoning capabilities, especially in the fields of mathematics, science, and programming.
Recently, OpenAI and Microsoft are investigating whether DeepSek is using the data distilled from the GPT model to train R1 and V3. To avoid similar problems, Grok 3 applies a strategy to "hide" some thoughts in its reasoning chain. In addition, Grok 3 also presents similar features to DeepSearch from ChatGPT, allowing users to assign AI to conduct in-depth research on a specific topic.
In the near future, xAI is also planning to bring a new feature, namely the "sound mode" for Grok 3. Elon Musk stated that this feature will be available next week, providing Grok with the synthetic voice capabilities he currently doesn't have. In addition, xAI plans to launch the company's API with support for DeepSearch so that developers can build services and applications on it.
Grok 3 is currently available to X Premium+ customers who pay a subscription fee of 50 US dollars (IDR 816 thousand) per month. According to leaked information, xAI will also launch a new subscription package called "SuperGrok," which is expected to be priced at 30 US dollars per month or 300 US dollars (IDR 4.8 million) per year, providing full access to Grok 3's reasoning capabilities and various other advantages.

Lastly, Musk confirmed that Grok 2 will be open-source in the next few months. "Our approach is to release the previous version as open-source when the latest version is ripe and stable," Musk said. He expects that Grok 3 will reach this stage in a few months, after which Grok 2 will open to the public.
The release of Grok 3 comes at a very competitive time in the AI race, just days after DeepSek launched a powerful open-source model. In addition, xAI is also trying to expand its influence by increasing the capacity of their data centers, including the "Clossus" supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, which is claimed to be the largest in the world.
However, some analysts like Gil Luria of DA Davidson think that an increase in Grok 3 compared to Grok 2 may not be comparable to the huge resources used to train it.
In addition, last week, a consortium of investors led by Elon Musk made an offer of 97.4 billion US dollars (Rp 1.5 quadrillion) to acquire OpenAI's nonprofit assets, but the offer was rejected by the ChatGPT maker. With xAI getting more aggressive in the AI race, competition with OpenAI, Google, and DeepSee is predicted to be even more fierce in the coming months.
