JAKARTA – Lenovo announced that the company is suing ASUS for patent infringement. This lawsuit has been filed with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC).

Lenovo said that ASUS had infringed patents on hardware, software and connectivity in some of its products. Therefore, Lenovo filed a lawsuit on Wednesday, November 15.

This lawsuit is also a response to ASUS' patent filing last August. The company is understood to have made an application to the Munich Regional Court regarding mobile technology. Before suing, Lenovo had offered a cross-licensing agreement.

For 39 years of innovation, Lenovo is determined to protect its patent rights. Lenovo is known to have more than 28,000 patents and another 14,000 patents are still pending, beating ASUS's patents which have not even reached 6,000 at the end of 2022.

With these incommensurable numbers, Lenovo's Deputy General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Officer John Mulgrew said the company will be more strict about the patents it holds.

"The time has come for us to assert our patent portfolio more actively, given our strength and position and experience as a licensee and licensor, to achieve greater balance in licensing," said Mulgrew, quoted by VOI from Lenovo's release.

Mulgrew added that the issue of taking this license cannot be ignored. The threat of taking royalties is something serious enough to pay attention to, so Leonovo has to take legal action.

“While litigation is always Lenovo's last resort, we believe that we need to protect our intellectual property while continuing to promote transparency in licensing to enable continued investment in innovation,” explained Mulgrew.
