An Increase In Digital Transactions Can Be A Field For Cybercriminals, How Come?

JAKARTA - Country Manager of Indonesia Palo Alto Networks, Adi Rusli, during the Media Briefing: Report on Cybersecurity Conditions in ASEAN 2023 on Monday, September 18, revealed that the increase in digital transactions in Indonesia of 47 percent came from e-commerce and super apps.

According to him, this increase occurred because many companies or business actors wanted to be more connected with suppliers and other third parties.

“There are lots of people who claim to be super apps and many of them take advantage of cyber security. "From B2B, many have opened APIs to be able to connect to suppliers, customers, and so on," said Adi in his presentation.

Along with the increase in digital transactions, it turns out that there is a real impact of the risk of cyber attacks, where more than half (60 percent) of organizations in Indonesia feel that they are at high risk of cyber security threats, especially those operating in the Services (Banking and Finance) sector, Essential Services, and Manufacturing.

"23 percent of organizations in Indonesia admit that there has been an increase in cyber security incidents and that disruptive attacks have grown," Adi explained further.

Interestingly, Adi actually revealed that companies that have more qualified human resources in terms of implementing security solutions are actually more targeted by cybercriminals, compared to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Furthermore, Adi explained that accessing the account from another device or taking over control of the account, as well as the problem of uneven 5G connectivity are some of the reasons this could happen.

For this reason, Adi advised that cyber security must be accompanied by transformation not only in terms of technology, but also individuals and company culture.

“Cybersecurity must be accompanied by transformation of the individual, not only the technology, but the processes including the culture. For example, create a password that is difficult to guess, don't share it. "We have to start from the individual's mindset first," he explained.
