The Chinese Government Will Form A Working Group To Set Metaverse Standards

JAKARTA - China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced on Monday 18 that it will form a working group to set standards for the metaverse sector. This is done, as Beijing's efforts to become a global standard determinant for new technologies.

The ministry released a draft proposal to form a working group for the metaverse, a shared cyberspace that can be accessed via the internet, on Monday. The proposal states that the metaverse is one of the nine growing technology sectors where China should try to set standards.

Metaverse has become one of the most popular tech trends since 2021, but there has been no consensus on what qualifies as a metaverse despite the existing hype, a problem that MIIT has raised in this proposal.

"[The metaverse industry] faces many challenges," MIIT said, "It is urgent to promote the development of a healthy and orderly metaverse industry through standardization and guidance."

MIIT adds that the metaverse industry is experiencing a clear lack of definition, which has allowed some capors and companies to hold speculation in the market.

MIIT also describes the metaverse as an "integrated innovation that combines a variety of cutting-edge technologies". MIIT states that the metaverse will drive many innovative business models, new business opportunities, and growth for the digital economy.
