JAKARTA - Kaspersky researchers recently revealed that cybercriminals often use artificial intelligence (AI) to carry out their evil actions.

But on the other hand, Saurabh Sharma, Senior Security Researcher for the Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) Asia Pacific at Kaspersky, also revealed where even cybersecurity teams can leverage AI for good.

A study from ZDNET last year stated that the Asia Pacific region is experiencing a shortage of 2.1 million cybersecurity professionals, and needs to fill a cybersecurity talent gap of 52.4 percent as the digital economy drives.

"This urgent need can encourage IT security teams to consider using smart machines to improve their organization's cyber defense and AI can help in key areas such as threat intelligence, incident response and threat analysis," said Sharma in a written statement received.

Sharma said AI algorithms can be used to access and analyze previously published research as well as previously seen tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs), leading to potential threats quickly.

Furthermore, AI can suggest anomalies in the provided set of logs, understand security event logs, generate log views of specific security events, and recommend steps to find initial implants.

But Sharma highlighted the limitations of AI in building and maintaining cyber defenses:

  • To focus on adding to existing teams and workflows
  • Transparency should be part of the exploration and application of Generative AI, especially when it misinforms
  • All interactions with Generative AI must be logged, available for review, and maintained for the life of the product deployed in the enterprise

"If used effectively, these technologies can also reduce the skill requirements of security analysts, but organizations must remember that smart machines can augment and complement human talent, but not replace it," he added.
