JAKARTA - OpenAI wants teachers to start using ChatGPT to accelerate student learning. The company also shares how to teach with and about AI.

ChatGPT is currently available in the well-known big language model (LLM), GPT-3, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4. In the company's official upload entitled Learn with AI', OpenAI describes examples of six educators from various countries.

Most of them are at the university level, but some teach at High School (SMA), using ChatGPT in their classrooms.

One of them is the Professor of Instructional Technology at Old Dominion University, Helen Crompton, who encourages graduate students to use ChatGPT as a substitute for certain personas.

He explained that the tool was used like a debater who would point out weaknesses in their arguments and recruiters interviewing for a job, or a new boss who might provide feedback in some way.

"Exploring information in an atmosphere of conversation helps students understand their material with additional nuances and new perspectives," said Crompton.

There is also a high school computer science teacher at American International School in Chennai, India, Geetha Venugopal who likens students to teaching AI tools by teaching students how to use the internet responsibly.

In its class, Venugopal advises students to remember that the answer ChatGPT provides may not always be credible and accurate, and to think critically about whether they should believe the answer.

They have to confirm it through other major resources. The goal is to help them understand the importance of constantly developing critical thinking, problem solving, and their creativity skills.

However, OpenAI warns the model may not be suitable for all classrooms, both teachers and students who know their class best and can make decisions after reviewing model outputs.

In addition, the issue of the use of generative AI in class has sparked controversy, especially when students use it as a way to take shortcuts or avoid doing their own job, such as writing essays.

In fact, several schools, districts, and education departments around the world have banned the app and added it to their list of internet network blocks.

Despite the New York City Public School system, the US made changes in May to allow teachers to use the ChatGPT as they wish, as quoted from VentureBeat, Friday, September 1.
