JAKARTA, (VOI.id) - Facebook is improving the policies and technology they use to protect women using the platform from intruders in cyberspace.

"The general theme regarding women's security tends to be the same in various places in the world. But if you look more specifically at certain countries or regions, behavior is very influenced by local culture," said Deputy Director of Global Policy Management Monica Bickert quoted from the official Facebook blog, Wednesday, October 30.

Facebook is sharpening their artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities to proactively detect nude or near-nude images and videos that are shared without permission, without having to wait for reports from users.

The company, based in San Francisco, USA, uses digital fingerprints and photo-matching technology to delete and block the photos from being shared on Facebook and Instagram platforms.

Facebook has also updated their policy to understand women's security issues in cyberspace, after discussions with experts and women's empowerment organizations from various countries.

The company, led by Mark Zuckerberg, found that each country or region may have different sexual harassment issues based on the norms and customs that apply in that country.

For example, according to Facebook, women in the United States feel harassed if their naked photos go viral online. Meanwhile, women in other countries feel humiliated if someone uploads their photos with men who are not family members.

"To address these broad differences in types of harassment, our rules must be prudent and comprehensive," Facebook said on its blog.

Facebook also provides a special feature for women using the platform in India, Pakistan and Egypt, in the form of controls to control who can download and share their profile photos.

Female Facebook users in the country, as well as a cybersecurity organization, have concerns that their profile photos are being stolen and used to create fake accounts aimed at humiliating them or their families.

Global Facebook also provides tools to manage accounts, including ignoring unwanted messages and blocking other accounts without the knowledge of the account owner.
