On Wednesday, July 26, leading technology companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Alphabet's Google, and Anthropic announced the launch of a forum to support the development of a safe and responsible large machine learning model (LLM).

Industry leaders in the field of artificial intelligence stated that the forum will focus on coordinating security research and disclosing the best practices for the so-called "border AI models" that exceed the capabilities present-day most advanced models.

These models are basic models that are very capable and can have serious enough dangerous abilities to pose a huge risk to public safety, as industry leaders have been reminded of.

Generative AI models, such as those used in chatbots such as ChatGPT, use large amounts of data at high speed to provide responses in the form of pros, poetry, and images.

Although the cases of use for such models are numerous, government agencies including the European Union and industry leaders such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have stated that appropriate security measures are needed to address the risks posed by AI.

"Companies creating AI technology have a responsibility to ensure that the technology is safe, secure, and remains under human control," Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a statement.

The industry body, Frontier Model Forum, will also cooperate with policymakers and academics, facilitating the exchange of information between companies and governments.

The agency will not engage in the lobby, as described by an OpenAI spokesperson, but will focus on initially developing and sharing a public library on performance measures and technical evaluations for border AI models.

The Forum will form an advisory board in the coming months as well as regulate funding through working groups and create executive boards to lead its efforts.

"This is an urgent job and this forum is very ready to act quickly to advance AI security," said Anna Maju, Vice President of Global Affairs at OpenAI.
