JAKARTA - The biggest sporting event in Southeast Asia, the 2023 SEA Games will start in a few months. This year's SEA Games will be held in Cambodia, from 5 - 17 May 2023.

As one of the sports branches that will compete in this year's Cambodia SEA Games, the esports national team is actively conducting national training (Pelatnas) to pursue the target of becoming the overall champion.

Deputy Chairman of the 2023 SEA Games Cambodia National Esports Team Board, Christian Surjadi, said that 40 professional Indonesian esports athletes will take part in the national training until May 6. After that, the athletes will prepare to fly to Cambodia to represent Indonesia at this prestigious sporting event.

"So, May 6 will be the last national training in Indonesia, and we will start dispatching our athletes to the Cambodian SEA Games," Christian said in the Cambodia SEA Games Media Talk session, Monday, April 10.

Christian also revealed that the athletes had conducted game evaluations during the national training for the targets set by the Indonesian Esports Executive Board (PBESI) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) to become the overall champion in the esports branch.

"If we look back, we can be quite proud because, during the SEA Games in Vietnam, we brought home 2 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze. At that time we won 2nd place in the esports branch, from 11 countries participating," he said.

Furthermore, Christian also revealed, during this one-year training period, all athletes and coaches had learned about the weaknesses and strengths of players in the previous SEA Games.

"Well, on this occasion, we were only given a one-year span. We have learned from what are our weaknesses and strengths, how to improve in the national training this time to become the overall champion," Christian explained further.

"Because the target has been set not only by PBESI, but also by Kemenpora, Indonesian esports must become the overall champion of the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games," he added.

Indonesia will field 40 professional athletes with six esports branches at the SEA Games this time. It should be noted that the esports matches at SEA Games Cambodia 2023 will take place on 8 - 15 May 2023. The full schedule will follow soon.

"Please note, because we need the full support of the whole community, stakeholders, and whoever it is to support Indonesia, especially esports," he concluded.
