JAKARTA - The latest report by Kaspersky experts entitled “The Dark Side Of Kids Virtual Gaming Worlds” reveals that in 2022, phishing used by cybercriminals mostly targets young players and mostly imitates global titles such as Roblox games, Minecraft, Fortnite and Apex Legends.

“In 2022, cybercriminals are even exploiting games designed for 3-8 year olds. This highlights the conclusion that cybercriminals do not filter their targets by age and even attack the youngest gamers, with the possibility of targets reaching their parents' devices,” said Vasily M. Kolesnikov, security expert at Kaspersky in a statement.

According to him, when criminals focus on young players, they don't need to even bother setting up complex fraud schemes, because they assume children and youth have little or no experience or knowledge of cyber criminal traps.

"Therefore, parents should be very careful about what apps their children download, whether their device has a trusted security solution installed and should teach their children about how to behave online," he concluded.

To keep your kids safe online, Kaspersky recommends users:

  • Ask your child if you can watch his favorite series or listen to a music track together. As an option, you can learn some safe practices together to stay safe online.
  • A good option can be a parental control application. However, it is important to discuss this topic with your child while explaining how these apps work and why they are needed to stay safe online
  • Explain that sensitive information should only be shared via messenger and only with people they know in real life.
  • Spend more time communicating with your child about online safety measures.
  • Make talking about cybersecurity more fun and interesting by discussing it with your child through games and other forms of entertainment.
