JAKARTA - Microsoft has launched a preview of two AI-backed services designed to manage telecommunication networks, relying on the same capabilities used to manage the company's cloud Azure platform.
Operators can leverage advanced artificial intelligence to open up new business opportunities from data and insight into their operations, including the implementation of high-speed 5G networks, the company said in a blog post.
Microsoft first entered the 5G arena after the acquisition of cloud network companies Affirmed Networks and Metaswitch in 2020.
The company has been very focused on AI, investing a lot of money in the OpenAI ChatGPT bot, which has attracted widespread attention to artificial intelligence in Silicon Valley and out there. Microsoft said last month that it wanted to embed the AI into all its products, while OpenAI continues to pursue the creation of human-like intelligence for machines.
"What we do is take our original cloud work and create it specifically for the network space of these telecommunications operators. I think a very good example of that is all the AI ops work we are introducing into the system," said Jason Zander, deputy executive president of mission and strategic technology at Microsoft.
"We bring the same technology into this space," he added. "Every operator I show is very excited."
Telecom partners such as AT&T Inc, Ericsson, and Nokia Oyj will be able to take advantage of Microsoft's new Nexus service, an all-in-one platform that allows operators to manage their networks from the cloud, and two different "AIOps" services.
Monica Zethzon, vice president at Ericsson, said that these developments would allow operators to "transform their core network while improving customer experience".
