JAKARTA - Twitter Inc is working to introduce payments on its social media platform and has started applying for a regulatory license. This was first reported by the Financial Times on Monday, January 30 citing people familiar with the matter.

Twitter's new boss, Elon Musk, is pushing the social media to create new revenue streams as it faces declining ad revenue, following the company's October 2022 takeover.

Development of the payments feature is being led by Esther Crawford, director of product management at Twitter, who, according to the report, now appears to be Musk's key lieutenant.

Key lieutenant is a senior position in an organization that has an important role and major responsibility in the company's operations and strategy. They usually work closely with top leaders in achieving company goals and play a key role in making important decisions.

Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Musk previously said the acquisition of Twitter would be part of a master plan to create an "everything app", a service that would offer social networking, peer-to-peer payments and e-commerce shopping.

Prior to Musk's takeover, Twitter was exploring in early 2021 allowing its users to receive tips, or digital payments, from their followers.
