JAKARTA - WhatsApp plans to immediately discontinue support for some iPhone devices running iOS 10 and iOS 11 starting later this year.

According to WABetaInfo who is aware of the notification, WhatsApp is asking iPhone users to immediately install the latest version of the operating system on their phones, so that they can continue using the app after October 24.

"Update iOS to the latest version to continue using WhatsApp. WhatsApp will stop supporting this iOS version after 24 Oct 2022. Go to Settings, click General, then tap Software Update to get the latest iOS version," the notice reads.

The company recommends users to install iOS 12 or later. That means iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6s users can still continue to use WhatsApp on their devices, but iPhone 5 and 5c owners should consider upgrading to a new phone.

Launching Engadget, Monday, May 23, with the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c almost a decade old today, it's likely that the move won't affect too many people, as they may not be widely used anymore.

WhatsApp is one of the leading instant messaging services globally and is popular on Android and iOS. Millions of iPhone users worldwide use WhatsApp, and the end of support for some older devices may be bad news for some of them.

This notification coincides with a few more weeks of the WWDC 2022 event, where Apple will announce iOS 16. Rumor has it that the operating system will stop working with the first-generation iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE.
