JAKARTA – Car rental company Hertz Global Holdings announced on Monday, April 4 that it will buy up to 65.000 electric vehicles over five years from Swedish EV maker Polestar. This is the latest move by the car rental company to add a zero-emissions vehicle model to their fleet.

Hertz says Polestar cars will be available starting this spring in Europe and then in 2022 in North America and Australia.

The Florida-based car rental company said it would order the Polestar 2 sedan. The decision had Hertz shares up 1.75% in Monday's premarket trading. This is because the policy is considered pro-public which will further increase their prestige in the car rental business.

Reuters reported that Hertz in October 2021 also announced its order to buy 100.000 electric cars from Tesla Inc, primarily the EV maker's Model 3.

According to the car rental company's website, in March, Hertz added the mid-size Tesla Model Y SUV to its fleet of electric vehicles.

Polestar, founded by Geely China and Volvo Cars, will join special-purpose acquisition (SPAC) firm Gores Guggenheim Inc this year.

"This Hertz partnership will bring the extraordinary experience of driving an electric car to a wider audience, meeting the various short-term and long-term mobility needs of our customers with us," Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said in a statement.
