JAKARTA - Twitter Inc is again experimenting with allowing users to showcase up to 50 products for sale on their profile. Sources on the social media platform said Wednesday, March 9, that this experiment was their attempt to gain a share of the $45 billion US market for so-called social trading.

Facebook and Instagram, which are owned by Meta Platforms Inc, have long been leaders in social commerce, allowing merchants to set up virtual shops and sell their products.

The beta test for the Twitter Store will be available to select businesses in the United States and will be visible to people using the Twitter iPhone app.

Reported by Reuters, US wireless carrier Verizon, one of the partners in this trial has displayed iPhone cases and wireless chargers on its Twitter store on Wednesday, March 9. After viewing the product on Twitter, the user is directed to the merchant's website to checkout or make a payment.

This experiment expands on an earlier feature Twitter started testing last year that allowed a brand to showcase up to five products at the top of their Twitter profile.

The San Francisco-based social media company is also experimenting with live streaming shopping, which allows people to buy clothes, accessories and other items while watching a live video of a product's brand.
