MPR Highlights The Strategic Role Of Young People In Preserving Democracy

JAKARTA - The younger generation has a strategic role in preserving democracy to create a safe, advanced, and prosperous country, said MPR Deputy Chair Hidayat Nur Wahid.

Democracy continues to be maintained in Indonesia, he added, according to information quoted from Antara, Wednesday.

However, that does not mean that democracy in the country does not have a challenge: it needs to be maintained, improved, and improved.

This was conveyed during a meeting with representatives of the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Muhammadiyah University Surabaya and BEM Muhammadiyah East Java Bali in Jakarta, Monday.

He said that the strategic role of young people, for example, will be seen in the 2024 General Election.

"Volators in the upcoming elections are dominated by the younger generation, namely the millennial generation (33.60 percent) and Generation Z (22.85 percent)," he said.

He reminded young people to increase their concern for democracy because if they don't, then Indonesia will be led by those who also don't care about the quality of democracy.

He explained several steps that young people can take to contribute to increasing awareness about democracy.

The first step is to educate the public to understand their rights and strengths to build quality politics, namely by participating in the 2024 General Election.

Second, utilizing modern communication media, such as social media, to educate each other, exchange insights, and expand the network, not only among young people, but also society in general.

"That way, people will have awareness and concern for democracy to improve (property) today and the future of their own nation," he explained.

He noted that the struggle of the younger generation for democracy and building a better nation in the future will be full of challenges. However, the younger generation can imitate the struggles of national figures, including Muhammadiyah scholars, and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).
