Still A Prototype, Honda Introduces The Latest Generation Hydrogen Fuel Cell

JAKARTA - Honda continues to advance in hydrogen technology by launching its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell at a trade show in Brussels, Belgium.

While still in the prototype stage, this latest technology is promised to be applied to various types of vehicles, including hydrogen-electric cars, commercial vehicles, and construction engines.

"We believe demand for this technology will soon reach the critical number needed for full commercial implementation," said Ingo Nyhues, Deputy General Manager of Business Planning and Development Honda European, quoted from the Autoblogging page, Wednesday, November 22.

Although the next generation of hydrogen drivetrain technical specifications have not been revealed by Honda, the company describes them as a multipurpose unit with compact dimensions, powered output, extraordinary durability, and rapid start-up capabilities, even in low temperature conditions.

Honda plans to implement this system on hydrogen-powered CR-V models, which are scheduled to be available in North America and Japan by 2024. The move marks a significant introduction of hydrogen-electric passenger vehicles to the market.

In addition, Honda will be working with Isuzu to develop a commercial vehicle prototype. Testing is scheduled to begin in March 2024, with a target of producing a model that is ready to be marketed by 2027.

As is known, car manufacturers who play in the hydrogen segment are relatively few, for example, there is Toyota with Mirai, then BMW in collaboration with Toyota in particular exhibits the experimental X5 hydrogen-powered in early 2023. In addition, Hyundai is also the main supporter of hydrogen-powered vehicles with NEXO.

However, the hydrogen industry needs to address a number of barriers before they can be widely accepted in the global market, including the development of a more widespread charging infrastructure, in line with the already equitable growth of electric vehicle infrastructure.
