JAKARTA - Automotive giant manufacturer from the United States (US), General Motors (GM), is again facing problems due to recall on several of its models.

The recall involved a problematic Takata airbag following an incident in Brazil. The total number of vehicles affected by this is more than 900 units of vehicles worldwide.

Reported by Reuters, August 1, the recall includes several vehicle models such as Chevrolet Camaro, Sonic, Volt, and Trax produced in 2013. In addition, Buick branded vehicles were also affected by the Verano model. In detail, 767 vehicles were affected in the US, 101 units in Canada, and 46 units in other countries.

The trigger for the recall began when GM received allegations that Chevrolet Camaro 2013 had an accident in May 2022 and the front driver's airbag inflator broke out. GM responded by conducting an inspection to ensure and find the fraction in the component due to a defect in Takata's airbag production.

"GM took this field action with great care," said the representative of the company that houses the Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC brands.

As a further measure, GM decided to withdraw all vehicles that had inflators from suspected production sites but the company did not find further reports related to other cases.

As is known, a recall involving Takata airbags has occurred several times before. In May 2023, BMW issued warnings for Series 3 2000-2006, X5 2000-2004, and Series 5 2000-2003, involving 90,000 vehicles.

In February 2023, several models of Honda and Acura from 2001-2003 also received warnings, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) issued warnings for 276,000 Dodges and Chryslers from 2005-2010.

Stepping back further, in 2013 there was a mass recall involving millions of vehicles from various brands due to the airbag problem. Due to this incident, Takata went bankrupt in 2018.

Since 2009 cases of Takata airbags have surfaced, more than 30 deaths worldwide and hundreds of injured victims including 26 of them have occurred in the US.
