Indonesia Has A "Current Price" Of Traditional Music Royalties Abroad

JAKARTA - Chairman of the National Collective Management Institute Dharma Oratmangun revealed that Indonesia has a "treasure" in the form of a reward for the use of economic rights, aka royalties in traditional songs/music abroad.

While attending the operational permit ceremony for three Collective Management Institutions (LMK) of Nusantara Traditional Music in Jakarta, Monday, Dharma gave an example of Indonesian songs translated into other languages, for example China and Malaysia.

"That has our intellectual property rights there. That means, there is a treasure and we have a lot of creative ways to elegantly collect it," said Dharma, quoted by Antara.

Dharma explained that so far they have continued to open themselves up to fight for the owners of Copyright and Related Rights to obtain their economic rights based on the order of the law and the constitutional mandate. According to him, so far LMK has a simple task, namely data collection, collecting, then distributing economic rights owned by copyright owners and related rights owners.

Therefore, Dharma continued, the existence of the LMK Musik Traditional Nusantara which has obtained an operational permit further strengthens the consideration that traditional music is the identity of the Indonesian nation that must receive protection. LMKN assigns the task of the Indonesian Traditional Music LMK to carry out cultural diplomacy missions to collect royalties.

The Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) through the Directorate of Copyright and Industrial Design of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights has just granted operational permits to three Collective Management Institutions (LMK) of Traditional Archipelago Music to protect the rights of Indonesian traditional music actors and help songwriters and music to gain their economic rights.

The three LMKs that received the operational permit were LMK Langgam Cultural Creation, LMK Prokarindo Utama, and LMK Citra Nusa Swara. In 2021, the Ministry of Education and Culture facilitates the formation of three traditional Indonesian music associations that have become legal entities.

The Cultural Creation Langgam Association is a forum for the creator of traditional Indonesian music, while the Nusa Swara Citra Association is a forum for traditional Nusantara music performance actors. Meanwhile, the Pro Karindo Utama Association is a place for traditional music producers of the archipelago.

The three associations became LMK for Archipelago Traditional Music.
