Honda Signals The Presence Of The S2000 EV, Debuts At The End Of This Year

JAKARTA - Honda often gives surprises by presenting various mainstay and iconic models. However, rumors of the return of the S2000 are getting stronger after Honda signaled about the possible presence of its first EV sports car. What's more, this year Honda celebrates its 75th anniversary, and was once the legendary S2000 roadster was created to commemorate Honda's 50th anniversary of its founding in April 1999.

According to a Car Magazine report, Monday, July 24, the electric-powered sports car is expected to launch by the end of this year with the latest platform, namely e:N Architecture, and will use an electric motor at the back.

The interesting news, Honda Technical Consultant Kotaro Yamamoto, gives further signal that the sports car is very likely to carry the emblem "Type R," which signifies the high-performance variant of the manufacturer bearing the "H" logo.

"Type R for racing. It will bring pleasure. Electric cars can provide this, and Type R is not required to use combustion engines," said Yamamoto.

The possibility of the presence of the S2000 EV is further strengthened by images released by Honda in the previous year, featuring two units of sports cars covered in curtain. At that time, Honda announced plans to launch 30 EV models globally for 2030.

Although Honda has yet to provide official confirmation regarding the sports car, it is strongly suspected that one of the units in the image is the successor to Honda NSX, and another unit is suspected of being the S2000 which has become a rumor material.

If this rumor is true, then this EV sports car is expected to arrive no later than the end of 2023. The S2000 EV will compete with the MG Cyberster and Porsche 718 Boxster EV in the electric sports car segment.

This is not the only time Honda has signaled about the possible presence of the latest S2000. In May, the Vice President of Honda Motor Europe Ltd, Tom Gardner, hinted that it was possible that Honda's next product would be a car with a "sporty" character.

Rumors about the rise of Honda S2000 have been going on for quite a long time. In 2017, Honda's then CEO, Takahiro Schigo, had expressed his desire to revive the legendary roadster.
