JAKARTA - Director and writer James Gunn has announced that filming for the third or final installment of Guardians of the Galaxy has been completed. In his photo upload, Gunn is seen laughing while sitting with Marvel players such as Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Gunn's brother, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, and Dave Bautista.

"The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trilogy is finished. I love this incredible cast and crew and their wonderful talent and kind soul. I am a human being who has been fortunate to have them on their way for almost a decade," Gunn said, quoted by People on Sunday, May 8.

"And yes Zoe (Saldana) is with us, this is the only photo I have with her and the unannounced actor with us!"

Earlier this year, Gunn appeared on the Hero Nation Deadline podcast where he talked about "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" being the final installment.

"This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians," Gunn said of the third film, due to hit theaters in May 2023.

Gunn, who also directed the first two volumes for Marvel, said the upcoming film is a big one.

"It's very, very big and dark, and different than people think. I just want to be honest with the characters, the story, and give people the conclusions they deserve for the story," Gunn said.

Gunn added that concluding a story that fans have followed for years is always scary, but he's trying to do his best.

"I'm aware that the third film in most trilogies sucks, but that's not always the case," he said.

Production on the third film began in November 2021 with Gunn sharing photos of the cast together on Instagram at the time.

"It's been a strange and long and sometimes challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way only made this moment happier. Back on set with the Guardians family for the first day of shooting #GotGVol3," James wrote at the time.

In an interview with Empire earlier this year, Saldana also talked about filming "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" and reprising her role as Gamora one last time.

"It's bittersweet; after years of complaining about that green make-up, I find myself already nostalgic about it," says Saldana.

Saldana revealed that while filming there was a lot of sadness but also a sense of pride that they had achieved something great.

"James Gunn has written a beautiful story that made us emotional even while we were shooting," he said.

Filming during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic doesn't make things any easier. "Omicron toyed with us every day, but we got through it and we're happy," said Saldana. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
