JAKARTA - PT Hutama Karya (Persero) is conducting technological-based innovations that are sustainable to create technology infrastructure that can support the company's business in providing optimal service for toll road users.

"The application of technology is an answer to the needs and challenges faced in toll road operations, as well as making it easier for road users to access information and monitor the latest traffic from toll roads that they want to cross," said Executive Vice President (EVP) Corporate Secretary Hutama Karya Tjahjo Purnomo in a written statement, quoted Thursday, November 23.

Tjahjo said that currently his party has developed five technologies to improve services, such as the development of water treatment plants (WTP), the implementation of smart ramps on a number of managed toll roads, and the development of the HK Toll Apps application as a medium of information driving on Hutama Karya toll roads based on mobile.

Next, the implementation of the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system which is integrated with national ETLE in its prosecution, as well as the installation of a Weigh in Motion (WIM) device in creating toll roads that are free from over-dimensional over-load (ODOL) vehicles.

"Toll road users can directly monitor traffic conditions before driving through Smart CCTV in real-time available on the HK Toll Apps application," said Tjahjo.

In addition, there are (three) technologies that facilitate toll operations, such as the development of intelligence traffic systems (ITS), smart closed circuit television (Smart CCTV) and Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor (RTMS) data that can detect constraints on toll roads and detect traffic conditions in real-time.

Tjahjo explained that the ITS system was developed using artificial intelligence (AI) which is centrally controlled at the command center at HK Tower, and can be accessed in the control room of each toll road with 24-hour personnel guarding.

According to him, the advantages of this system are to detect and analyze toll revenue control, toll equipment performance, traffic conditions through CCTV that are integrated into the ITS system, hole handling on toll roads, and customer complaints from social media.

"As for the lighting of public traffic (JPU), Hutama Karya has installed a total of 3,704 smart ramps on the Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar Toll Road, Pekanbaru-Dumai Toll Road, Medan-Binjai Toll Road, and Sigli-Banda Aceh Toll Road.

The advantage of this smart lamp is the automatic setting feature and remote monitoring which greatly facilitates toll operation and by using LED makes this lamp more energy efficient compared to conventional lights.

"The use of smart ramps in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, has not been widely used. Whereas in other countries, such as the United States, Germany, Japan, which have already implemented this on toll roads," he said.

He assessed that the use of smart ramps is very efficient in helping to reduce energy consumption significantly and resulting in substantial operational cost savings.

In addition, Hutama Karya itself is developing WTP technology to process water sourced from wells, rivers, reservoirs or water recycling into safe and suitable water for various purposes.

Currently, the new WTP tool is implemented at Rest Area KM 306, the Terbanggi Besar-Pematang Panggang-Kayu Agung Toll Road and during the evaluation period, the resulting water is considered to be in accordance with the standard clean water. Later, this WTP tool will also be applied to other sections on the Trans Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS).

"This technology is a solution to water problems in several sections in JTTS, most of which divide forests or rice fields so that the water quality is still lacking and needs treatment," he said.

With various technologies that have been implemented and also continue to innovate, Tjahjo is optimistic that his party is ready to face the implementation of INDI 4.0 on toll roads by providing technology infrastructure for the future.

"We believe that readiness to face Industry 4.0 is the key to providing optimal service to the community and supporting sustainable growth in the transportation and infrastructure sectors," he added.
