JAKARTA - President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo revealed that the emission of disposal from the power generation sector could reach 1 billion tons in 2060 if the Government and PLN did not intervene.

Currently, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the electricity sector are 290 million tons of CO2 per year.

"So this is not an accumulation but this is per year. But of course the government, in this case the President and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, have launched NZE for the GPA sector in 2060," Darmawan said in a Hearing Meeting with Commission VII DPR RI, Wednesday, November 15.

He explained that several efforts have been made by PLN by collaborating with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in reducing GHG emissions, one of which is by removing 13.3 GW of Steam Power Plants (PLTU) which are still in the planning phase.

"This means that the CO2 emission avoiding here, because what was previously planned to be built was not so, of course, the Avoid amounted to around 1.8 billion tons. So 1 GW of emissions was 5-6.5 million tons of me per year, multiplied by 25 years, almost 2 billion tons," explained Darmawan.

Another problem that PLN does is replacing 1.1 GW of PLTU with a renewable u energy generator (EBT) as a baseload. Then also replacing 800 MW of PLTU with gas plants.

"We also did co-firing, then dedieselized. 3 years ago we thanked the esdm minister, we released the greenest RUPTL in PLN's history, namely 51.6 percent capacity addition or 21 GW is the addition of EBT-based capacity," he continued.

Previously, Darmawan also emphasized that PLN had designed an Accelerated Renewable Energy Development (ARED) which would overcome these challenges.

Through ARED, PLN will develop a green enabling transmission line and smart grid capable of supplying electricity from separate and isolated EBT sources to electricity demand centers.

According to him, ARED is also able to increase the capacity and reliability of the PLN system to channel electricity from EBT sources whose characters are intermittent or fluctuating along with weather changes.

Darmawan also revealed that in the latest RUKN, the Government and PLN have agreed to increase the EBT mix by 75 percent and the remaining 25 percent will come from gas by 2040. That way, he is optimistic, with the support of the government and the global community, Indonesia's energy transition can continue to be encouraged.
