JAKARTA - Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) Mahendra Siregar revealed that there is an opportunity for Steam Power Plants (PLTU) to be included in sustainable financing.

Mahendra said that currently his party is still revising the rules for the green taxonomy or green taxonomy.

"Indeed, the OJK is currently revising the green taxonomy that we have previously published. The revision is associated with various mining that has occurred in the region and internationally," he said at a press conference for the August 2023 RDK which was held virtually, Tuesday, September 5.

He gave an example for the ASEAN area itself, which has just revised the Asean Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance which has been ratified by a second version, which among other things states that coal PLTU is in the process of transitioning to early retirement, including in groups that can be provided with sustainable financing.

"In other words, it is included in the green category if the coal power plant is in the energy transition process, this is the first time it has been approved by regional or international organizations," explained Mahendra.

According to him, in other countries, the energy transition process is usually if the acceleration of early retirement of the coal power plant is associated with the construction of an EBT power plant as a unit.

"But if in a certain context it is not necessarily an early end to the coal power plant, it must be directly linked to the construction of the EBT power plant," Mahendra continued.

Meanwhile, for coal power plants whose energy is used for green-based industries such as electric vehicle battery industry, Mahendra said that currently his party is still reviewing the revision of Indonesian taxonomy. Because, he said, what needs to be seen later is the final result of the complete supply chain process which can provide more benefits and positive impacts.

"We are currently reviewing this because the one production link in the downstream or midstream will determine as an overall calculation of the products produced by the supply chain," concluded Mahendra.
