The Ministry of Transportation Records a 41.59 Percent Increase in Public Transport Passengers during the Christmas and New Year Holidays

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation recorded 8,316,131 public transport passengers traveling during the 2022 Christmas and 2023 New Year holidays.

This number increased by 41.59 percent compared to the previous year.

This number is the cumulative number of passengers in all modes, which are calculated during the 12-day monitoring period, from Monday 19 December 2022 to Friday 30 December 2022 yesterday.

"This number has increased by 41.59 percent compared to the same period last year, namely 4,857,432 passengers", Ministry of Transportation spokesperson, Adita Irawati, told reporters, written on Sunday, January 1.

Adita said the highest cumulative number of passengers was air transport passengers with 2,425,613 passengers, an increase of 31.97 percent from the same period in 2021.

Then, followed by road transportation with 1,779,764 passengers, or an increase of 41.28 percent. Then, ferry transportation has as many as 1,659,773 passengers, or an increase of 36.22 percent.

Furthermore, rail transportation as many as 1,582,528 passengers or an increase of 64.14 percent, and sea transportation as many as 684,529 passengers or an increase of 26.42 percent.

Based on temporary data, said Adita, the peak movement of public transport passengers during the 2022 Christmas and 2023 New Year holidays this year occurred on December 23, 2022, namely 769,382 passengers for all modes of transportation.

Meanwhile, the highest number of daily passengers for road transport occurred on December 26, 2022, with 171,567 passengers.

Then, the highest crossing transportation was on December 24, 2022, with 165,503 passengers.

Meanwhile, the highest air transportation was on December 23, 2022, with 244,717 passengers departing. For the highest sea transportation on December 21, 2022, there were 69,287 passengers. Then, the highest rail transportation was on December 23, 2022, with 156,990 passengers.

Based on Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk's monitoring data at the four main toll gates, until Friday 30 December 2022, the movement of vehicles leaving the Jabotabek area is still quite high.

From December 29 to 30 2022, a total of 348,952 vehicles left the Greater Jakarta area.

This number is still high at 16.94 percent when compared to normal traffic.

Adita said, with the extreme weather disturbances that occurred from the end of the year until early January 2023, the Ministry of Transportation appealed to the public to remain vigilant and careful.

"We recommend postponing traveling if the weather is unfavorable, and if you still have to travel, prepare yourself well to anticipate travel disruptions due to bad weather, such as travel delays or cancellations, and others", Adita said.

Adita said, to anticipate extreme weather disturbances during the Christmas and New Year holidays, the Ministry of Transportation together with stakeholders in the transportation sector will tighten supervision regarding the safety aspects of travel and will strictly instruct travel delays if weather conditions do not permit.
