JAKARTA - PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo and Port of Los Angeles (LA) plan to reactivate strategic partnerships that were previously initiated through the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2019, including expanding cooperation in developing environmentally friendly ports (green ports).

The plan was conveyed at a meeting of the Executive Director of Port of LA Eugene D. Seroka, along with all staff with Pelindo, in Jakarta, Wednesday (31/8/2022).

"This moment is a good time to reactivate the strategic partnership between Port of LA and Pelindo. Of course, after the merger of Pelindo, the prospect of cooperation will be more open in the future with Port of LA, including in expanding the scope of cooperation in the green port," said Pelindo President Director Arif Suhartono in a written statement quoted by Antara, Friday, September 2.

On that occasion, Arif also conveyed the latest updates on post-merger companies, including a number of developments in several ports in Indonesia, namely Belawan, Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Perak, Kijing, Bali and Makassar.

"We hope that this good collaboration can have an optimal impact on efforts to improve port services and connectivity in the future, including in overcoming challenges related to regulations, Change Management and engagement between stakeholders," said Arif.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti revealed that the plan for cooperation between Pelindo and Port of LA had not been realized during the two-year pandemic.

However, according to him, the delay in the realization of cooperation actually helps both parties to be able to see more opportunities.

"This is quite promising because we want to build more opportunities and we want to create more strategic relationships than various aspects in the previous MoU, including in the development of green energy in the port environment," said Eric Garcetti.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Port of LA, Eugene D. Seroka also expressed his hope to continue and increase cooperation with Pelindo.

Port of LA wants to expand green line shipping routes from Jakarta to LA, as well as its hopes of building new technologies with Pelindo to cut unnecessary cost components (logistics).

"We believe this cooperation can strengthen economic and commercial ties for both ports and our respective countries," said Eugene.

In addition to plans for development and innovation in the fields of green energy and technology, other supports agreed, among others, are the smooth flow of cargo between ports in Jakarta and in Los Angeles, cooperation in the field of training and port expertise and human capital development.
