JAKARTA – President Director of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) Jahja Setiaatmadja was seen attending the 16th Bulletin of Monetary Economics & Banking International Conference and Call for Papers 2022 forum initiated by Bank Indonesia (BI) in Jakarta today.

At the event, Jahja participated in a photo ceremony together with BI officials and other stakeholders at the peak of the activity.

Meanwhile, one of the forum's agenda is the keynote speech from the Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo regarding a number of strategic programs being carried out by the monetary authority.

On this occasion, Perry admitted that the central bank was still finalizing the plan to issue digital rupiah in the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) scheme.

He said, BI is planning an option to appoint large banks as wholesalers to the retail segment. Meanwhile, the determination of the big banks is still in the selection process.

“In Indonesia, we tend to distribute digital rupiah to wholesalers. We are currently in the process of selecting the major banks that will receive this mandate. Meanwhile, the distribution itself will use the blockchain system,” said Perry, on Thursday, August 25.

Perry ensured that all these processes were on the right track to immediately issue digital rupiah at the right time.

"This is what we are doing, forming a digital rupiah as a legal medium of exchange while maintaining sovereignty, selecting big banks, and building the system itself," he said.

For information, BCA is one of the leading banks in Indonesia that focuses on the transaction banking business. Citing the company's release, as of the first semester of 2022, the total transaction volume rose 40 percent year on year (yoy) to reach 10 billion transactions, the majority of which came from mobile banking.

It was stated that the development of digital solutions has consistently been the main capital for this BBCA stock coded bank to maintain strength in the transaction banking segment. As of the end of June 2022, BCA serves approximately 31 million customer accounts and processes approximately 62 million transactions daily with the support of 1,242 branch offices and 18,065 ATMs.

VOI itself has contacted BCA officials to get confirmation regarding this matter. However, until this news is revealed, the editors are still waiting for the intended answer.
