JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) has confirmed its role in leading the transition of Indonesia's energy industry by targeting the energy mix and reducing emissions. This is part of the company's commitment to establishing the energy transition program as a top priority.

"Pertamina targets a more comprehensive reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30 percent before 2030. In addition, Pertamina will prioritize the development of New and Renewable Energy (EBT) to address environmental problems, which is in line with Indonesia's Energy Mix in 2030," said Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati in a statement quoted Monday, March 21.

Pertamina also supports the Government of Indonesia in the G20 Presidency which has chosen the energy transition as one of its main priorities.

As part of The Business 20 Task Force on Energy, Sustainability, and Climate, Pertamina has the same priorities as the G20 Indonesia, which must be a strong catalyst for green recovery and go hand in hand with the principles of energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability.

"Pertamina is committed to being recognized not only as a global energy player but also as an environmentally friendly, socially responsible company and upholding good corporate governance," continued Nicke.

To achieve this, Pertamina has formed a Sustainability Committee in 2021 which is chaired directly by the CEO of Pertamina. This committee pays great attention to global energy issues including energy transition programs.

Nicke said Pertamina's efforts to develop environmentally friendly and sustainable energy were carried out in 8 strategic initiatives, including the development of green refineries, bioenergy development, hydrogen commercialization, gasification, initiation of battery ecosystems, and integrated energy storage, as well as increasing geothermal installed capacity.

"We believe that Indonesia's abundant geothermal resources scattered in the ring of fire can be a strong backbone to accelerate the energy transition, which is in line with the Indonesian government's goal of achieving net-zero emissions," concluded Nicke.
