JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) said that the condition of industrial areas in Indonesia is currently entering a transition period from the third generation area (Eco-Industrial Park) to the fourth generation industrial area (Smart-Eco Industrial Park).

The Director-General of Resilience, Territorial and International Industrial Access of the Ministry of Industry, Eko Cahyanto said, this development requires the industry to be able to utilize technology according to the era of the industrial revolution 4.0.

"Therefore, industrial estates need to be encouraged to build digital infrastructure and carry out digital transformation in the management of their industrial estates, so as to facilitate communication and service delivery to tenants," he said in a statement, Wednesday, February 2.

According to Eko, the digitalization aspect is one of the main keys in the transition to the fourth generation industrial area. This is because the integration of digital infrastructure can create an efficient circular economy.

"The Ministry of Industry continues to encourage every new and existing industrial area to transform into a Smart-Eco Industrial Park through the use of the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, and Data Centers," he said.

Eko added, it is necessary to form a special area for the digital industry with the aim of centralizing infrastructure and using renewable energy.

“An example is the use of water resources in the Jatiluhur reservoir as an energy source for the Indosat Data Center. In addition, there is Nongsa Digital Park in Batam," he said.

Previously, the Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the government continues to develop the number of industrial estates in Indonesia as attractive investment locations. This step is believed to be able to contribute to national economic growth.

"The development of industrial estates in Indonesia has increased both in terms of number and area of land," said the Minister of Industry.

For information, as of January 2022, there are 135 industrial estate companies with a total land area of 65,532 hectares spread across Java, Kalimantan, Maluku, Papua, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and Sumatra. Of the 135 industrial areas, 46 percent or 30,464 hectares of them have been occupied by industrial tenants.
