Novak Djokovic Sets Sensational Record After Qualifying For The 2023 US Open Semifinals

JAKARTA Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic set a record for the most men's Grand Slam semifinals in history after a straight set win over Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2023, Wednesday, September 6, 2023 WIB.

Djokovic qualified for the semifinals after winning 6-1 6-4 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. This victory keeps his chances of winning the 24th Grand Slam in his career.

In addition, this is the 47th Grand Slam semifinal in the 36-year-old's career or the most of any other player in the history of the sport.

He overtook Roger Federer who previously held a record as the tennis player with the most appearances in the semifinals of the Grand Slam.

"I've been playing on this pitch for years, so many epic games. I can't wait for the other games in the next few days," Djokovic said.

The victory over Fritz also extended Djokovic's winning streak over American players to 30 times. He last lost to a US player in 2016 when he lost to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon.

Another record that Djokovic carved after this result was keeping a perfect 13-0 win-loss record in the quarter-finals in New York. In addition, he also set a winning-loss record against Fritz to 8-0.

The win over Fritz left Djokovic only two more wins to match the record number of Grand Slam Margaret Court titles in the top singles.

Currently Margaret Court is the only tennis player with the most title collections in Grand Slam, which is 24 titles. Djokovic is trailing in second place on the list with 23 titles of his after winning in France Open this year.

Djokovic, who has three titles in the US Open, will face winner Frances Tiafoe or Ben Shelton in the last four. The two players who both came from America brought the hosts' hopes of becoming the first men's singles champion in 20 years.

However, it seems a bit difficult to stop Djokovic's ambition to get his fourth title in the US Open after previously winning the event in 2011, 2015, and 2018.

The Serbian has won four straight sets in two weeks in New York. He only fought hard against Laslo Djere in the third half, rising from a two-set defeat to stay in the competition.
