JAKARTA - An Italian man who infiltrated and ran into the field during a World Cup match in Qatar while carrying a rainbow flag (LGBT) was released after undergoing brief detention, the Italian foreign ministry said Tuesday.

The man identified as Mario Ferri also wore a Superman logo with the words "Hormati Wanita Iran" on the back and "Save Ukraine" on the front.

Ferri was on the pitch for about 30 seconds during the second half of the match between Portugal and Uruguay before being tackled and escorted out by security officers.

"The foreign ministry, together with the Italian embassy in Doha, followed the case after a field invasion incident," the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement sent to AFP, quoted by Antara, Tuesday.

"After a brief detention, he (Ferri) was released by the authorities without further consequences," the ministry said, without elaborating on where he was detained or by whom.

The captain of seven European teams has planned to wear rainbow-themed anti-discrimination armband tires during tournaments as part of a diversity campaign.

However, they canceled their plans due to the threat of disciplinary action from the FIFA football body, including yellow card sanctions.

Ferri has made similar protests before, including at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he raised the issue of children living in poverty.

On his Instagram account, Ferri posted a picture from inside the Lusail Stadium in Doha, where Portugal won 2-0 over Uruguay on Monday.

The incident only briefly aired on television.

"We know what's going on around this World Cup... This is a normal thing to happen," said Portuguese player Ruben Neves after the game.

"Of course, we are all with them too. With Iran too, with Iranian women. So I hope that doesn't happen, no matter what with the boy, because we understand his message, and I think the whole world understands it too."
